Welcome!

I will be documenting the construction of our pole barn home. We decided to build because we had been in the same mobile home for many years. The main reason I started this blog was to help others. When we first started out, we looked for information to help "Do It Yourself" people such as us but didn't find much on the web. With the exception of the concrete foundation work and enclosing the structure, we are doing all the work ourselves. But we have been blessed with family members and friends who have helped us a great deal. We broke ground in July 2006 and we moved in October 2007. If you want to read more about the details of our plans, click here.
Think of this site as a diary of DIY home construction.

Update January 2009:
Hi friends, I had made my blog private for some time but have decided to open it back up again. I was way too busy with other things. I am happy to report we have moved in but still have much to do to complete things. There is still trim to put up, some grouting to do, a few more floors to finish but more on this later. I am in the process of redoing this blog and just wanted to thank everyone for visiting :)

Tiling the Bar

I started tiling the bar a few days ago. I'm using white glazed ceramic 6x6 tiles. The grout will be a toss up between green tea and black. I need to make up my mind soon. Will take more photos when I start the grouting. I plan on going to look for kitchen shelving today and I need to find a very narrow but tall cabinet to put next to our electric range.

Laying tile in half bath

Two days ago my husband showed me how to lay ceramic tile. I am getting the hang of it but that adhesive is a mess! This photo is of the tile I've laid in the half bath and our vanity. These tiles are 8x8's.

Ceramic tile for the living room

Well, we had some problems with our brown bag floors in the living room. Seems that after I had finished them, they got wrinkles in them. This happened with our son's room as well. The only thing we can figure is that it had something to do with temperature/humidity. We decided to take all of it up with scrapers and lay ceramic tile in its place. This has been hard work but it had to be done. We were going to sand down the bag flooring and add the tile over it but were afraid we might run into a problem down the road if we didn't get the bag flooring up and start with clean concrete. The poly and paper was not easy to get up but a scraper I found at Lowe's with a extending handle and 4 inch straight blade helped tremendously. We were able to get underneath all that poly and paper and get most of it up. Today I'm going to spend the day in knee pads scrubbing up all the remaining paper. I will take a picture of this process and also of our new ceramic tile.

New Appliances!

I went to pick out a dishwasher, refrigerator, and electric stove a few days ago. They delivered them yesterday. I chose white for these appliances because it will go best with the colors in my kitchen. They really look great! The refrigerator is a side by side with water in the door so hubby will have to join that water line with the one in the master bath. The refrigerator and dishwasher are Whirlpool. The flat surface stove is General Electric. Clean up will be a breeze.

Just when I think we are getting closer to moving in..

Seems like there is always another thing to do to finish this house and get moved in. Just when it seems we are almost finished, we think of something else that must be done.
In our master bath, my husband needs to build a wood extender that will go across at a diagonal from our tub to the corner of the toilet. After he gets this done I can sand the wood, stain it, and then cover it with poly. Once that is done, I can start working on tiling the floor of that room and maybe the washroom. We bought ceramic tile a few days ago and we will install it ourselves. We put the light fixture in the master bath a few days ago.

What remains of the painting

Kitchen ceiling (may need to buy more paint for this job).
Master bath ceiling
About half of the master bedroom ceiling and the half bath.

Am planning on doing the kitchen ceiling last. The flooring in both baths will be white ceramic tile but not sure about which grout color to go with. If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to them :)
Lately my mind is drifting from these things (painting and flooring), and I find myself dreaming of such things as kitchen backsplashes and window blinds.

All indoor plumbing finished.....finally!

The husband finished all of the indoor plumbing work a few days ago. He had me buy a 10 foot stick of 4 inch sewer pipe yesterday and last night he laid that in the ground. We will be needing around 40 more feet of this pipe to finish the job. Lately we have been so worn out and stressed from from this build, but we know that someday soon it will be over and we'll get to move in. That keeps us going.

Laundry room

Started painting the laundry room today.

Painting the bathrooms

The past couple of days I've been busy painting the bathrooms.

August 22, 2007

Flooring, Painting, and Plumbing

Yesterday was spent painting the half bath. The vanity and fixtures in that bathroom are already installed. The only thing we have to do in there now is put in the toilet. I helped the husband do a little work in the main bath afterwards. He was making a brace for the tub fixtures.

Today I put the 4th coat of polyurethane on the living room floor. I started around 3:00 in the afternoon and finished around 8:00 this evening. Tomorrow we are going to lowes to get a lot of stuff we need to complete the plumbing in kitchen and bathrooms. Pictures soon.

Living room floor

I'm going to try to do all rooms in the brown bag technique. Here are the reasons I prefer doing my rooms with the bagged method:
1. Inexpensive- A room this size (375 sq feet) will cost no more than $50.00. Of course it takes a lot of hard work and doesn't go fast, but it's worth it.
2. It looks wonderful! I plan on using some area rugs in this home and most designs will go with this type of flooring. This photo was taken in the middle of applying polyurethane.

Plumbing in half bath

Tonight we had planned on installing the vanity which goes in the half bath but we couldn't finish it. The husband has to make a brace because the sink wouldn't go flush against the wall. So a little kink in our plans for now.

August 14, 2007

Plumbing in master bathroom

Cut a hole through the wall directly to the left of the vanity for water line. That is our laundry room and we will have a door dividing the two rooms. I will take pictures of the laundry room later. We also put the sink fixtures in tonight. I chose a dark color of paint for this room. Alameda Shade is the name and it is a cross between brown and plum. I really like it. I'm not sure when I will finish the paint job in this room because I have to finish the living room floor first. Hubby just pulled me off that job to paint behind this vanity.

I've been busy cleaning the living room floor

What is the best way I've found to clean these concrete floors of the mud and muck of construction? By hand. I use a heavy duty sponge and mopbucket. When I finish scrubbing, I go over the area with a mop 2 times. There's always a thin glaze of mud that is left behind after scrubbing by hand and that's why I have to go over the floor twice with the mop and very clean water. I am hoping to finish this chore by tomorrow.

Vent in half bath/more floor photos

Last night we put the vent pipe in the half-bath but didn't get finished. Still have to cut through the roof.

I decided to take few pictures of our son's bedroom floor. It really looks pretty good and I am learning more on this technique as I go along.

Mudding above shower

Even with all we've done, there are a few more places that need more mud before texturing. Tonight we finished the mudding above the shower in our master bath. I think we are now all done with this room but still have a little more to do in the laundry room.

What's been going on?

I know it's been a while since I've updated the blog. We've been busy with other things but thought I'd take time today to update. What have I been doing? Painting the living room. I decided to use the same color as I have for the kitchen which is antique lace. It is an off-white and has a very slight hint of pale yellow.

The 2 rooms are open to one another with only the bar and the arched entryway to the kitchen separating them so it was hard for me to decided whether to go with both rooms the same color or different ones. I think it looks pretty good. When I'm done with this room I'll be sure to post some pics.
Recently we got the electric going in our new home. I can run the air conditioner now while I do the floors and finish the painting without burning up :)

The brown bagged floors look great! I have to put 2 more coats of polyurethane on son's floor and then I'm done with that. Since I've took on this project, there are a few people I know who have told me they've done a bathroom, bedroom, or wall with the bagged technique. They all have told me they loved it and it turned out well for them.

Close up photo of kitchen base cabinet

While I was painting our master bedroom today, I decided to take a photo of one of our kitchen base cabinets. I finished these myself and am pretty pleased with them. I painted them a pale olive color. The paint color is homestead resort pale olive (Valspar from Lowe's). We are going to use lots of shelves in our kitchen and not go with many upper cabinets. We're also going to build an island but that will be one of the absolute LAST items on our to-do list. We still have so much to do like putting on the trim on our recessed lights, install ceiling fans, installing the wood-burning stove...the list just doesn't seem to end.

Installed Kitchen Sink

Tonight we installed the Kohler cast iron sink. I know this thing has to weigh 80 lbs! This is a first for us but I think we did well.
The faucet set is Moen.

July 21, 2007

Painted Kitchen Today

Today I started painting the kitchen. I managed to get it all done except for the ceilings. The color I chose is antique lace which is a wal-mart (color place) color but I had them do the paint in Kilz. I really like the way Kilz covers and with us having done the drywall ourselves, let's just say that we can use all the coverage we can get.

July 20, 2007

Finished our son's bedroom floor

We liked how our guest room floor turned out so me and my son decided do the same to his floor.

I have yet to apply the poly.

July 18, 2007

Applying Poly to Paper Bag Floor

Last night I applied the polyurethane over paper bag floor in guest room. Right after that, I noticed I had problems. I had used a roller to apply the poly and in a few areas I noticed marks where I had missed. According to directions, there should be 5 hours in between coats so I'm going to apply the poly to those bare areas next. After that, I will do two more coats then be done. I'll post pics of the completed floor soon.

We will be texturing the entire kitchen tonight.

Brown Bagging Guest Room Floor

I heard of a technique last year
when I was searching for flooring choices. I saw a few pictures online and thought I could do this myself! I started doing the brown bag flooring today in our guest room. First, I had to make sure there was no mud on the floor and it was totally clean. Then I ripped up rolls of brown construction paper into various sizes and shapes. I then mixed tacky glue with water *about 60% glue to 40% water. I used a paint roller to roll the glue onto the paper and then stuck it to the cement floor. I was really surprised about how good it looked. Looks like stone! After I finish glueing the paper to the floor I will let it dry completely, I figure a day or more and then put 3-4 coats of minwax poly over it. If any of you know for sure how many coats I need, please let me know. I had read where most people put 4 coats on. I have taken pictures, but they turned out a little dark. I plan on buying a new camera before this blog is complete. I will take more pictures as I progress on this job. It's a good thing I have a gardener's knee pad.

July 12, 2007

No more texturing for now

After we sprayed our bedroom last night, we looked over all the rooms and made a list of what needs to be done before we take up the hopper again:

  • we need to do some more mudding on kitchen ceiling

  • bottom of bar needs a last mudding over tape and screws

  • washroom just off the master bath needs both mud and tape

  • area over the shower in master bath needs both mud and tape

  • our bedroom closet needs tape and mud in some areas

We plan on mudding ceiling of kitchen tonight and if we get done before dark, we will go on to work in the bathroom.

As an aside, I ran upon an old post of mine about a possible move-in date. It made me chuckle. In this particular post made on February 1 of this year, I stated that I was aiming for the middle of March! Shows what rookies at home construction know.

Textured master bedroom and painted another room

I spent most of the morning painting son's bedroom. Was able to get all done in there except ceiling. In the evening, we sprayed texture in our bedroom. We had some mud left in the hopper so we sprayed the arch going into the kitchen and one small wall. Moved all kitchen cabinets and countertops out of kitchen earlier in the day.

July 10, 2007

Textured living room and getting ready to paint...finally

This morning around 9:00 am, I started painting primer on the guest room walls. Son's bedroom was textured yesterday and I went to Lowe's to once again check on paint colors. I bought 2 gallons of paint for his room called, "Waning Moon". It is Valspar from Lowes. It was the nicest clean white I could find. I am horrible at making decisions on colors. After I get guest room primed, hopefully I will have picked out a color for that room as well. My order (if I can stick with it) of getting the rooms painted and primed is:

  1. 3 bedrooms

  2. kitchen

  3. living room

  4. bathrooms

Tonight we textured the living room.

July 9, 2007

Beginning to texture walls/ceilings

Well folks, last night we finally started to texture the walls in our guest room. We used a hopper (texture gun) and air tank. The texture we're applying is called splatter. I can say straight up that we had no idea what we were getting into. Most of our time was spent mixing the mud and filling the hopper. That thing is very heavy when full of mud! Tonight we're going to be doing the ceiling of same room and I'm really curious as to how much harder that will be than the walls were. It seems hard enough holding up that spray gun to do the walls. My poor hubby, he is handling the hard stuff (spraying) while I have the job of holding the gun/hopper while he refills it :) Had to take a trip to get more mud today. Bought 8 - 45 lb boxes. I will post pics of our guest room asap.
Photo of hopper similar to the one we are using.

Mudding Part 2

Well we were finally able to start back on mudding the interior of the house last night. We finished the back porch 2 days ago. Hubby managed to finish mudding all three bedrooms! He is going to start texturing *with the hopper* tonight. We've never done this so it will be all new to us, but then again, everything up to this point has been as well :) I have posted some pics I took this morning of the finished rooms.

Master bedroom ready for texture

More work on back porch/bath vanity

First off, I wanted to wish everyone a very happy Independence day! We are planning on spending it with family and friends :)
Now, on to our progress. Last night we continued with covering our back porch. When my husband was sorting out sheets of metal, he ran onto a huge ant nest! Those things were scurrying everywhere. To the left is a photo of the vanity we recently purchased for our master bath.

July 2, 2007

Started Metal Roof on Back Porch

Tonight we started in on the metal roof for our back porch. I helped some by handing the husband 2x4's and then went inside to clean a little. We had a mess from all the sawing he's done in the past few weeks. After we're done with the porch work we can go back inside and finish up mudding the ceilings and a few places in the bedrooms. Then after that, our plans are to texture the walls, (we're going to do orange peel texture). We've decided that while I am painting, hubby will be working on the plumbing. I plan on taking pictures and posting them here often.

Progress on Front and Back Porches

Thought I'd report on our progress and what we've been up to lately. The past week we've had to work on the front porch in between heavy rains but managed to finish it up with the exception of the brown trim and guttering. Around 2 days ago we started on the back porch. This porch will be 30X8, smaller than the front which is 50X10. We just finished getting all the rafters secured on the back porch last night. If the rain holds off tonight we may be able to start putting some tin on. I'll post a picture of both the front and back porches soon.

June 27, 2007

View of front porch

Thought I'd post a pic of our front porch. We still have to do guttering, trim, and floor but those things will have to wait until we've finished most interior work. Pay no mind to that trash pile :) it's the scrap sheet rock we had to cart out and plan to burn.

June 22, 2007

No work done tonight. Too much rain

Was going to finish the front porch but the rain stopped us. Our forecast shows rain for the next 5 days.

June 21, 2007

Metal roof almost finished on front porch

We've really got a lot done in the past few days. Looks like we might be done with the front porch very soon!
Then we get the pleasure of starting on the back one. It will be smaller (300 sq foot).

June 19, 2007

More work done on front porch

More 2x6's attached to the joist hangers tonight. Won't be long until we can put metal roof on.

June 14, 2007

Work done on front porch

We put up some 2x6's last night. Had to measure/cut them, fit them flush into the joist hangers and screw them in. We managed to get around 5 done.
We've had pretty heavy rains for the past several days so that has held us up on getting more done.

June 9, 2007

4X12 s In the Ground for Front Porch

We have all 4X12's in the ground except for one that we will do tonight. After this, we will start putting the metal roof up.

June 2, 2007

Mud/Taped Bar and Finished Joist Hangers

I worked mudding/taping bottom of bar and mudding the laundry room while hubby finished putting up joist hangers for back porch. Now we need a pause from all this rain we've been getting so we can start putting up tin.

June 1, 2007

Putting up Joist Hangers

Last night was spent putting up almost all of the joist hangers it will take for the front porch. Tonight hubby will probably finish the remaining hangers for the front and start putting up the hangers for the back porch. We've been having a little dampness come in during the heavy rains we've had for the past month, so hubby has decided to lay off interior work on the house in favor of building the front and back porches. We bought the lumber we would need for both porches a few days ago. I've friends and family that sometimes I think I'm more excited about the front porch than I am the house being done! I plan on spending lots of time on the front porch.

May 30, 2007

Trip to Lowes

Went to Lowes and here's what we bought:

Kitchen counter top
Laminate that matches counter top (for the bar)
Kitchen Sink
Vanities for both bathrooms
Plumbing fixtures for kitchen sink and both bathrooms
Lumber for front and back porch
Quickrete for posts

Last night we unloaded all this stuff and called it a day!

May 28, 2007

Remaining list of things to get done before moving in

Today we sat down and made a list of what has to be done before we move in.
Here is that list so far:

  • Finish mud and tape
  • Texture Walls
  • Paint Interior
Electrical:
  • Pull Wires
  • Finish laying conduit line to Pole
Sewer/Plumbing:
  • Lay sewer line from house to septic
  • Install toilets
  • Install kitchen sink
  • Install vanities in bathrooms
Other:
  • Install kitchen cabinets
Now this list is only what HAS to be done before we move in. I've left out the flooring and a few other items. We plan on trying to get all flooring done before we move in but there is a chance that we might get only get the flooring done in half of the rooms and once we move in I can keep working on them. Same with painting.
Trim work will have to be done as well.

Mudding corner bead

Last night we mudded some corners and put water line in small bath. You know how I wrote not too long ago that I was sick of sheet rock? Well not I'm almost getting sick of mud! Seems like this job just drags on and on. Mud and tape, mud again, mud again....

May 24, 2007

Much Progress But I am Tired

We've been so busy the past few days that I haven't had a chance to update my blog until now.
On Tuesday, I started doing the 2nd round of mud in son's bedroom and the guest bedroom. Yesterday I started mud and taping the corner edges in the master bedroom. Got that and the 2nd mudding done in that same room then finished up mud and taping the interior of the closet. Yesterday I started mudding and taping at 9:00 A.M. All together worked around 8 hours and by the end of the day my fingers and wrists were so sore.
Late last night I started carting out the left over sheet rock and cleaning up the living room. I'm going to start cleaning up our mess in the kitchen sometime today.

Our son mud and taped the ceiling in the living room and kitchen. It took him around 2 hours.

My husband started mudding some on the arch and bedroom ceilings.

We bought the corner bead at Lowe's two days ago. We bought a total of 30 8 ft pieces.

The photo is a shot of the bar my husband drywalled a few days ago and the arch. The arch is looking much better but we are not done mudding it or the bar just yet.

May 19, 2007

Banjo broke down

Last night something went wrong with our banjo. Wouldn't get mud on half of the tape, so I mud and taped by hand. My husband opened it up several times and checked it out. I'm beginning to think it might be because the mud was too thick. Finished all of the kitchen now except for the ceiling. Earlier in the day I had done some more mudding in our son's bedroom. There are some gaps in the living room that I sealed with mud. Hubby finished one side of the bottom of bar. In a few days I'm going to finish painting the exterior of the house.

May 18, 2007

Started mud and taping in son's room/bar drywall

  • Went over a few walls in the living room for the second time with mud.
  • Started mud and taping in son's bedroom.
  • (Kitchen) started from pantry to arch with mud/tape but ran out of tape :(
Going to Lowes today to get tape.
  • Hubby started drywall on the lower part of the bar.
  • He hopes to pull wire tomorrow

May 16, 2007

Mud/Tape Kitchen

I decided to do some mud and taping in the kitchen. Got finished around 1:00 in the morning but managed to get all done except most of the ceiling. I thought I would hate doing it but actually liked it once I got the hang of it. But boy is it messy! I filled in some larger cracks with mud and will go back over them in a day or so with the tape. That wet banjo is well worth the money. I can't imagine doing this job without it. I must have loaded that thing with mud 10 times tonight.

May 12, 2007

Finished drywall around windows

Tonight we finished drywalling the 9 windows in the house. Lots of small pieces, took a while but am glad it's done. Now I think that the only drywall work we have is the bar. I plan to do more mud and taping in the next few days. I was thinking yesterday about flooring, painting and buying furniture. I got so overwhelmed that I decided I wouldn't dwell on those things right now. One thing I've learned is that it's ONE thing at a time and ONE day at a time when you are building your own.

May 8, 2007

Finished Living Room

Well, last night we finally finished hanging drywall in the living room. After that we did all of our son's bedroom. Now we only have to hang some rock in our master bedroom below the window and in our half bath then we are done with that long job :) We haven't done any more mud and taping since Sunday night.
