Welcome!

I will be documenting the construction of our pole barn home. We decided to build because we had been in the same mobile home for many years. The main reason I started this blog was to help others. When we first started out, we looked for information to help "Do It Yourself" people such as us but didn't find much on the web. With the exception of the concrete foundation work and enclosing the structure, we are doing all the work ourselves. But we have been blessed with family members and friends who have helped us a great deal. We broke ground in July 2006 and we moved in October 2007. If you want to read more about the details of our plans, click here.
Think of this site as a diary of DIY home construction.

Update January 2009:
Hi friends, I had made my blog private for some time but have decided to open it back up again. I was way too busy with other things. I am happy to report we have moved in but still have much to do to complete things. There is still trim to put up, some grouting to do, a few more floors to finish but more on this later. I am in the process of redoing this blog and just wanted to thank everyone for visiting :)

Finished pantry and other stuff

Tonight we finished the pantry and secured the sides of the bar for the sheetrock to go on it. Tonight hubby said he is going to Lowe's. I guess the last thing left for framing is building our sons closet. Next on the agenda will be the wiring.

Framed in the tub/shower today

We're almost finished framing in the tub/shower. We bought the fixtures but have yet to install them.

Finished antiquing cabinets today

I finished glazing the kitchen cabinets today and managed to put one coat of sealant on the BACK of the cabinet doors/lazy susan door. I also put one coat of sealant on the 2 drawers in sink cabinet. All I have to do now is put a second coat on the backs of cabinet doors/ as well as the entire sink cabinet and 2 drawers and lazy susan. Then I will have to start on the fronts of the doors and give them 2 coats of poly.

Worked on the base for toilet and tub tonight

I went out a few times to visit with hubby while he built the base for the tub and toilet in master bath. It was VERY cold. WE have been looking for wood stoves for this new home but recently, some family members told us that we could have a wood stove insert they don't use anymore. We are going on Saturday to look at it.

Started work on tub/shower and stool platform

Tonight we started on the platform for the tub and toilet in master bath.

Moving cabs around to get an idea

We moved the cabinets around to the kitchen to get an idea even without insulation and drywall done of what they might look like. I am not done with the cabinets just yet.

February 11, 2007

Finished recessed lighting and added more electrical boxes

Well, almost done to the point where we can start running electric.
From what I can tell, we have to put up wiring for front porch lights and build the pantry. We also have to do the plumbing / build the platforms for stools and tub/shower. Then I guess insulation is next, then followed by drywall.

Installing recessed lights

This is the first one! We only have 12 more to go LOL..

Fitting the flange to toilet

Took a look at this toilet we bought recently. Hubby is fitting this flange to the toilet in this pic.

Sealing, trimming and recessed lighting

Hubby sealed some more around windows and cut trim around side window. Then he tried to figure out the recessed lights. Thinks he has it now...hopefully

Clean up today

I cleaned the kitchen area and picked up trash in the house.

Bracing up the bar

Braced up the bar tonight.

Progress so far on finishing kitchen cabinets

I bought these stock cabinets at Lowe's and I am going to finish them myself.
I took this picture today when I got done with the second coat of paint. I had around 4 tablespoons of paint left after i had finished! Now only thing left is to wait a week, glaze, rub off and then add 2 coats of clear seal. This is a sink cabinet.

February 4, 2007

Installing rest of ceiling fan braces

Hubby finished ceiling fan braces and I screwed in and labeled the electrical boxes.

Building the Arch

Tonight we framed the wall and the arch for the entryway into Kitchen. I think this will prove to be a wonderful addition to our new home. This was the first time we had done an arch. Our nephew who has knowledge of home construction has helped us so much and we are grateful to him :)

Possible move in date?

I am aiming for the middle of march. That would be around 6 weeks from today. We still have to finish framing/ plumbing and electrical as well as drywall. This picture is of the west side of the house and as you can see, it was taken during our January ice storm. We had so much ice it was unreal.
