Welcome!

I will be documenting the construction of our pole barn home. We decided to build because we had been in the same mobile home for many years. The main reason I started this blog was to help others. When we first started out, we looked for information to help "Do It Yourself" people such as us but didn't find much on the web. With the exception of the concrete foundation work and enclosing the structure, we are doing all the work ourselves. But we have been blessed with family members and friends who have helped us a great deal. We broke ground in July 2006 and we moved in October 2007. If you want to read more about the details of our plans, click here.
Think of this site as a diary of DIY home construction.

Update January 2009:
Hi friends, I had made my blog private for some time but have decided to open it back up again. I was way too busy with other things. I am happy to report we have moved in but still have much to do to complete things. There is still trim to put up, some grouting to do, a few more floors to finish but more on this later. I am in the process of redoing this blog and just wanted to thank everyone for visiting :)

Progress on Front and Back Porches

Thought I'd report on our progress and what we've been up to lately. The past week we've had to work on the front porch in between heavy rains but managed to finish it up with the exception of the brown trim and guttering. Around 2 days ago we started on the back porch. This porch will be 30X8, smaller than the front which is 50X10. We just finished getting all the rafters secured on the back porch last night. If the rain holds off tonight we may be able to start putting some tin on. I'll post a picture of both the front and back porches soon.

View of front porch

Thought I'd post a pic of our front porch. We still have to do guttering, trim, and floor but those things will have to wait until we've finished most interior work. Pay no mind to that trash pile :) it's the scrap sheet rock we had to cart out and plan to burn.

No work done tonight. Too much rain

Was going to finish the front porch but the rain stopped us. Our forecast shows rain for the next 5 days.

Metal roof almost finished on front porch

We've really got a lot done in the past few days. Looks like we might be done with the front porch very soon!
Then we get the pleasure of starting on the back one. It will be smaller (300 sq foot).

More work done on front porch

More 2x6's attached to the joist hangers tonight. Won't be long until we can put metal roof on.

Work done on front porch

We put up some 2x6's last night. Had to measure/cut them, fit them flush into the joist hangers and screw them in. We managed to get around 5 done.
We've had pretty heavy rains for the past several days so that has held us up on getting more done.

We have all 4X12's in the ground except for one that we will do tonight. After this, we will start putting the metal roof up.

Mud/Taped Bar and Finished Joist Hangers

I worked mudding/taping bottom of bar and mudding the laundry room while hubby finished putting up joist hangers for back porch. Now we need a pause from all this rain we've been getting so we can start putting up tin.

Putting up Joist Hangers

Last night was spent putting up almost all of the joist hangers it will take for the front porch. Tonight hubby will probably finish the remaining hangers for the front and start putting up the hangers for the back porch. We've been having a little dampness come in during the heavy rains we've had for the past month, so hubby has decided to lay off interior work on the house in favor of building the front and back porches. We bought the lumber we would need for both porches a few days ago. I've friends and family that sometimes I think I'm more excited about the front porch than I am the house being done! I plan on spending lots of time on the front porch.
