Welcome!

I will be documenting the construction of our pole barn home. We decided to build because we had been in the same mobile home for many years. The main reason I started this blog was to help others. When we first started out, we looked for information to help "Do It Yourself" people such as us but didn't find much on the web. With the exception of the concrete foundation work and enclosing the structure, we are doing all the work ourselves. But we have been blessed with family members and friends who have helped us a great deal. We broke ground in July 2006 and we moved in October 2007. If you want to read more about the details of our plans, click here.
Think of this site as a diary of DIY home construction.

Update January 2009:
Hi friends, I had made my blog private for some time but have decided to open it back up again. I was way too busy with other things. I am happy to report we have moved in but still have much to do to complete things. There is still trim to put up, some grouting to do, a few more floors to finish but more on this later. I am in the process of redoing this blog and just wanted to thank everyone for visiting :)

Progress on Front and Back Porches

Thought I'd report on our progress and what we've been up to lately. The past week we've had to work on the front porch in between heavy rains but managed to finish it up with the exception of the brown trim and guttering. Around 2 days ago we started on the back porch. This porch will be 30X8, smaller than the front which is 50X10. We just finished getting all the rafters secured on the back porch last night. If the rain holds off tonight we may be able to start putting some tin on. I'll post a picture of both the front and back porches soon.

I have followed your work for the last year and just wanted to know~ looking back was it all worth it? We are in the same situation~ living in a mobile home building on our own site....

How much total do you think you spent?

Any new pictures?

Thanks
Cathi

Hi Cathi, well you know, I believe it was very much worth it. But as I'm sure you know, the progress seems SO slow at times. How neat that you're in the same boat as we are.
Glad you asked about the cost. That will be revealed in an upcoming post as I've got to get a handle on recent purchases. I really think many will be shocked to see how inexpensive this venture was. What helped us greatly is that some materials such as the metal and some of the lumber were used and we saved a lot there.

Right now a ballpark figure at this stage would be around $25,000-$30,000.
I'm going to take some pictures tonight if the rain hold off.

When did you guys start your home and what type home are you building?
