Welcome!

I will be documenting the construction of our pole barn home. We decided to build because we had been in the same mobile home for many years. The main reason I started this blog was to help others. When we first started out, we looked for information to help "Do It Yourself" people such as us but didn't find much on the web. With the exception of the concrete foundation work and enclosing the structure, we are doing all the work ourselves. But we have been blessed with family members and friends who have helped us a great deal. We broke ground in July 2006 and we moved in October 2007. If you want to read more about the details of our plans, click here.
Think of this site as a diary of DIY home construction.

Update January 2009:
Hi friends, I had made my blog private for some time but have decided to open it back up again. I was way too busy with other things. I am happy to report we have moved in but still have much to do to complete things. There is still trim to put up, some grouting to do, a few more floors to finish but more on this later. I am in the process of redoing this blog and just wanted to thank everyone for visiting :)

Arch, walk-in pantry, and living room ceiling drywalled

We got so much done today! Started out drywalling living room ceiling, then almost finished the arched entry to the kitchen. Later in the day, we were able to get the outer part of the walk-in pantry done. I will post some pictures later tonight on the progress. Looking more like a home everyday now.
I cleaned up around the yard and carted some trash out. I'm going
to start cleaning up a few rooms tomorrow. From the way it looks now, we may be able to start taping next weekend.

Frame for the stove pipe finished

Tonight we finished putting the wood frame for the stovepipe in the ceiling. Had to get this done before tomorrow because that's when we're finishing up hanging sheetrock in the living room. After that, we will have all of the ceiling done! Some of our family came by and looked over the progress we've made.

Wood Stove

Don't know if I mentioned it already, but we are going to be putting in a wood stove insert. I thinkit is a "papa bear" by fisher and a family member is giving it to us. It looks just like this one. I was glad we didn't have to go out and buy one. Now hubby will be welding on legs to this insert before we install it.
I'm going to put 2 or 3 coats of high heat paint on the stove before we get it moved into the house and set up. We have to build a frame to make the stove pipe fit flush against the ceiling. The pitch of the roof has created some problems. Well, hubby started last night building this frame but then switched over to doing more sheet rock. Last night for the most part, they hung rock in the master bedroom closet. Our son is going to start on hanging rock in his bedroom closet tonight but mom and dad are going out

Rain

It's been raining here on and off for days. Glad we're working inside. I've been a little under the weather and didn't go out while hubby and son were working tonight, so I'm not sure what they did. I'm going out at first light and check things out. They were working on hanging sheetrock in the bedrooms but may have moved on to something else. We're going to be hanging drywall this weekend in the living room. I hope to have them mud and tape and texture a room or two very soon so I can get busy painting and flooring at least some of the house.
This photo I took today is from the kitchen looking toward the living room.

Progress on the drywall

Started this evening hanging sheetrock in master bedroom. Finished with all except the closet. We also hung some by the front door in the bar area. I have to go buy 2 more gable vents this week to put in east end of the house. We've already put 2 in the west end. Had no idea since I didn't buy them, that they are 24.00 each at Lowe's. I was guessing they were around 10.00 each :) I am getting an education in what all these seemingly "little" things cost.

On another note, I've been trying to decide on flooring. Recently I found a great deal on clearance boxes of bamboo flooring. This is just like the laminate wood. I've never installed laminate, ceramic tile or any other type of flooring for that matter. But I don't know if there would be enough on this clearance sale to do our living room. We are planning on having ceramic tile in kitchen and laminate or this bamboo in living room. I am thinking of acid staining the concrete floors in bedrooms.

I am still in the last stage of narrowing down my paint colors for the rooms too. The drywall still has a while to be done, so while I have this time I need to start making decisions about this stuff.
Yes, I am dragging my heels.

The sheetrock's the thing

Family came over and helped with hanging the sheetrock. We started today hanging rock in the east side of the house. We've been blessed in having some family members and friends help us with this endeavor. We were able to get two bedrooms done. I try not to think about the fact that after all this sheetrock is hung, then we have to go on to mud and tape and texture the walls. Only then will I be able to paint them.
I'm not sure, but we may be able to finish hanging sheetrock by next weekend, I sure hope so. I am not the one hanging this stuff and I am so sick of it!! I am only doing cleanup, painting, flooring, etc. One thing's for sure, I'm not setting any more move in dates.

Drywall Progress

Worked until 1:00 a.m putting up sheet rock in the master
bedroom and above the arch. We also finished above the bar area.
Photo below is full shot of kitchen after finishing
this morning.
Don't look at that mess on the bar!

Photo below is of the area above the bar.
We are putting in 3 pendant lights here which will
work off a dimmer switch.

Below photo was taken after we
had finished drywall above the kitchen entry
way arch . We are putting in one light
which will work off a dimmer.

Today we finished sheet rocking half of the house. We did the master bath, kitchen but did not do the pantry, bar and arch.

Why choose steel frame rather than conventional wood frame?

It's stronger. There are lower property taxes when you use steel. No problem with termites. Less problems with critters like mice and other rodents. I found a site that addresses the myths of steel framed homes, it is here.
It goes in depth as to the positive aspects of framing with steel.
